Jackson – Age 23

Shitty Jobs

Dominique collapsed down on the opposite side of the table from Jackson, still laughing, as Evan and Aiden disappeared toward the bar.

“I’ve never seen Evan punch anyone,” she said. “I mean, I obviously I knew he could be violent, but I didn’t realize he was fine with bar fights. Not to mention that I cannot even imagine why he would decide to protect me.”

“You said he knew the rules,” said Jackson with a shrug. Dominique looked confused. “Family always comes first.”

She nodded. Jackson wanted to chase down why she thought Evan was obviously violent. After watching the way Eleanor and Aiden sheep-dogged Dominique while Evan was around, he could take a guess, but he wanted to know the full extent. On the other hand, that seemed like a third date kind of question, not a first night out. He decided to approach the Evan situation from a different direction.

“What happened to his mom? I Googled, but I couldn’t find anything.”

“I don’t know,” said Dominique, with a shrug. “She was some sort of Russian model. She’s around somewhere. I think she sees Evan when she comes into town. They were never married, so I think Uncle Owen got full custody when she split.”

“Hm,” said Jackson. The story sounded funky. If nothing else, it seemed odd that she hadn’t attempted to get custody after Owen’s death. But he decided not to question it.

“Honestly, I still cannot believe you got them to agree to come out tonight,” she said still looking at Evan.

Jackson could believe it. He’d been confident when he’d asked that they would agree. Mostly because his cousins were still in residence at the rental house. Aiden maybe had the excuse of needing to wrap up Jackson’s case, but they both could have left already. But they hadn’t. And that told Jackson something about both of them. They wanted to be here—something that Dominique seemed to doubt.

“It’s very difficult to refuse a sincere request,” said Jackson.

“I think your sincerity confused them and they couldn’t figure out how to say no,” said Dominique.

“Yes, exactly,” said Jackson. “Prison therapy teaches you lots of tricks.”

Dominique spurted laughter in surprise. “Did you really have to do therapy in prison?”

“Yeah,” said Jackson. “You get extra yard time if you’re in a program. I signed up for a couple of college classes, therapy, and pottery. But they said we couldn’t do pottery anymore because someone figured out that you can make knives out of clay.”

“Can you really?” demanded Dominique eyes going wide in interest. “I mean, that’s terrible. Who would think of such a thing?”

Jackson laughed. Dominique was quickly becoming his favorite cousin. He was starting to suspect that she shared his sense of humor, but hid it behind a socialite façade. She also swore continuously, mostly he suspected, to annoy their grandmother, and he found it hard not to like.

“Yeah, apparently you can. But therapy probably is more useful on the outside. Well, I think that one guy turned his clay classes into an online bong business after he got out, but in general therapy gets you further than clay.
